UROHI, ABANDONED BY GOVERNMENT, NOT FORGOTTEN BY GOD

Urohi is located in Esan West Local Government Area, Ekpoma, Edo state and delineated Ward 8 electorally.
Urohi kingdom is made up of twelve villages - Eguare, where the Onojie of the kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Otokhine 1 of Urohi Kingdom, resides; Eko-Omije, Urohinagholo, Ekhure, Ohon, Evbhokhure, Ohogho, Akugbe, etc with a population of over 10,000 people. It has one Secondary School located at Eguare and five Primary schools spread across the community.

It has one Maternity home located at Eguare, a dilapidated Health Centre at Urohinagholo. No water but the only source of water supply in most of the villages are self-help boreholes or from the stream.

With one of the highest producer of pineapple in Edo state, every facility that has to do with government is in shambles and abandoned. The Health Centre, Maternity, Road, Primary and Secondary schools have been left in ruins.

The road to Urohi Community from Ekpoma, which was awarded by NDDC have been abandoned for the past five years or more. Ordinarily, it ought to link Ujogba, Amahor to Benin City.

Also, one of feeder road through Evbhokhure to Riboribo through to Uhi via Ehor to Benin City has been abandoned and impassible during the raining season. All cosmetic efforts to keep the road pliable are strictly by indigenes of the communities using the road.

The only market located in Eguare was abandoned by the Esan West Local Government council, who still extort the community through taxes and levies during market days. That the market is existing today was courtesy of the renovation and remodelling carried out by the sons and daughters of Urohi kingdom few years back.

With predominantly farmers as rural dwellers, the major produce include pineapple, yam, cassava (gari), plantain are abundantly available in the village.

In the area of electricity, the poles and transformers are only standing as appendages as electricity supply to the village is once in a blue moon. At the moment, most villages have solar powered street lights provided by the indigenes; making the community well illuminated at night.

During the electioneering campaign, the Governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki, visited the village where the Onojie conferred on him a Chieftaincy titled and reeled out the major challenges confronting the village.

Unfortunately, since coming to power for a second term, the Governor has not kept his promise and has not done anything promised the community.

Particularly, when Gov Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shuaibu visited the village during campaign, he promised to ensure Telecommunication providers provide their mast as the village was without one then. That has also not been complied with.

At the moment, the only MTN Solar network in the community was provided through the efforts of the indigenes of the community. Also, sadly, it is disgusting to know that the only government staffers at the secondary - the Principal and a teacher in the Urohi Secondary School - have been transferred out of the school without a replacement.

Unfortunately, despite letters written to both the local and state governments for their intervention, such letters for assistance have been ignored and jettisoned.
